What is a door hinge?
A door hinge is an element composed of articulated blades allowing the opening of a door. It is available in a wide range of shapes and in different materials:
Brass
In stainless steel
The metal
A hinge is made of 3 parts, the hinge pin (which acts as a pivot), the hinge member (the immobile element of the hinge) and finally the leaf (which serves as a support for the mobile part).
What is the difference between hinge, plug and hinges?
Hinges, pins and hinges are essential elements in fixing a door. However, each of them is optimal in a specific situation:
The hinge is best suited for cupboard doors and hatches (for going to the cellar for example)
Hinges are mainly found on interior and exterior doors and windows, although they can also be found on furniture doors.
The plugs are perfect for overlay doors. These are doors with a rebate around the perimeter.

The different types of hinges
Today, there is a wide range of hinges for your doors and furniture. It can be very difficult to find your way around. In this chapter, we will list all the ones that exist and their characteristics.
Offset hinges (with offset axis)
Offset hinges have the characteristic of having a greater opening range than conventional hinges. Count 180° compared to the 90° of more conventional hinges. To achieve this, the hinge node extends above the furniture and continues the opening of the door.
Invisible hinges
These are hinges that are not visible when the door is closed. Their purpose is to have an optimal aesthetic rendering. They are perfect for kitchens and all types of furniture.
It is possible to apply several types of pose to them:
The invisible surface-mounted hinges will be placed directly inside the furniture.
The concealed concealed hinge is, as its name suggests, recessed into the furniture. More precisely, into the edge of the door and the jamb.
However, a base is unavoidable for most invisible hinges.
The angled hinges
For your shutters, angled hinges are the ideal solution. It is called this because one of the two parts of the hinge has an elbow. This allows it to go around the side of the support and come to position itself securely. This hinge allows you to obtain an offset opening.
Universal hinges
Universal hinges are old-fashioned joints. Mainly because you can see the hinge when the door is closed. However, this does not prevent it from being very widespread in small furniture or for fixing cupboard doors.
Its strength is that it exists in several models and a multitude of poses. It would be necessary to choose whether you fix the hinge on the inside of the door and the frame or simply on the inside of the door and the face of the frame, or even on both facades. In all cases, it is necessary to know that the universal hinges do not allow to hide the amount of the frame by the door. This is why we see the knot when the moving part is closed.
Spring hinges
Also called the “two-way” hinge, the spring hinge allows the door to close automatically.
For the design, it is a classic hinge where springs are added to keep the door under tension when it is opened and to close it afterwards.
Piano hinges
The piano hinge is very common for opening chests/trunks or in converted spaces, for example boats or camper vans.
They can be recognized by their thin and long rectangular sections. These can measure up to several tens of centimeters long.
Friction hinges
The friction hinge allows a door to stay open by itself. Friction hinges give you the flexibility to choose the positioning of the door, thanks to an adjustment that you make on site.
Stop hinges
Stop hinges have the opposite purpose of offset hinges. The purpose is to control the degree of opening and limit the opening angle of the sash.
All this allows you to close furniture doors gently or ensure a perfect angle.
Double-jointed or double-rebated hinges
This is a very light hinge with two thin layers of iron. This lightness makes the hinge quite fragile so care must be taken. It is very practical for supporting low weights and light supports.
Lighter hinges
Lighter hinges are characterized by having a rounded end and two axes of rotation.
They are often present on older furniture and are generally brass-plated.
Knotted hinges
A knotted hinge has 2 or 3 knots and the pin can be removed from it. If the pin is removed, the hinge becomes unhinged. For this reason, this hinge resembles a hinge.

American hinges
This is a hinge, as classic as it gets, the only difference with the others is that it must be drilled or milled during installation.
The main criteria for choosing the right hinge.
The dimensions of the door.
This is a particularly important point for invisible hinges. Not all hinges are suitable for all door thicknesses, you have to pay attention to the width of the door. If the width is very large, you have to choose your joints accordingly. It is absolutely necessary to measure it before ordering your hinges.
The same goes for door height. The higher your door, the more hinges you need to support it.
The weight the hinge will have to hold.
It is very important to define the weight that the hinge can support as well as that of the door / leaf. Small hinges will really struggle to support heavy doors and will eventually break.
